Peace Is Not the Result of Violent Repression

Pain is an essential function that calls attention to a problem; the worse the problem, the worse it hurts. As this pain deepens and becomes more consequential in the wake of George Floyd's murder, demands for peace and order directed at demonstrators are clearly made in bad faith. The underlying condition must be addressed before it will stop causing pain - without justice, there can be no peace.

Old Narratives Die Hard

Opponents of Bernie Sanders’ progressive proposals warn us, "Even if you raised taxes to 100% and drained every single dollar in the United States, that still wouldn't be enough to pay for Bernie’s programs." We admit it: this is true. Nathan Locke explains why that’s never been the point.

COVID-19 Proves Our Point

Now that the government is dishing out money over a healthcare crisis, the "ounce of prevention" that Medicare For All would provide is looking better and better than the "pound of cure" we're currently employing. In fact, Nathan Locke notes that a Progressive system would ameliorate a gigantic portion of many other problems we're having as well.

Are Democrats Over?

Until the election of 1852, everybody understood that only a Whig or a Democrat could be elected. The Whigs, however, were unable to find consensus on the issue of slavery; and their house, divided against itself, could not stand. A similar thing is happening now with the Democrats around the issue of oligarchy - and it might spell the end of the party.

Big Brother Is Still a Thing

The debate over an ever-expanding surveillance state is still alive and well; but it is taking place out of the Trumpian limelight, buried by an avalanche of other authoritarian outrages. Where are we now? How did we get here? And most importantly, where do we go from here?

The United States is a Rogue State – And This Cannot End Well

A “rogue state” is defined as “a nation or state regarded as breaking international law and posing a threat to the security of other nations.”

A Global Industrial Revolution is Underway

The ideas behind the Green New Deal aren't just realistic - they're real, too. The "Third Industrial Revolution," championed by Jeremy Rifkin, is rolling out across the planet as we speak. This article examines the technological and structural specifics of this movement.

Progressives, Purity, and Pragmatism

Barack Obama has warned progressives to avoid in-fighting - "circular firing squads" - that weaken the overall progressive effort. Where, though, should we compromise? Where should we hold firm? Where do we draw the line between purity and pragmatism? Nathan Locke proposes a simple, common-sense litmus test.

What Freedom?

Another Fourth of July has come and gone, and with it another bombastic celebration of freedom. Freedom is one of our most celebrated ideals, and for good reason. These days, though, it seems actual freedom is in fairly short supply; and, depending on who you ask, it can mean different things. Nathan Locke explores how the trappings of freedom have obscured the essence of it in this reflection.

Do We Have Free Journalism?

Is there freedom of the Press in this country? No, but there is absolute freedom of Press executives. And it shows.

No Justice, No Peace

Why do politicians and the elite peddle “sticker shock” at social programs – like a New Deal – yet not the same “sticker shock” at our bloated military costs?

MMT Is No Joke - The Joke is How It’s Used

This is the real “joke that’s not funny.” MMT is no joke - but how it is currently being abused is. A progressive application of MMT (again, not MMT itself) merely seeks to shift that 'socialism' MLK mentioned away from imperialist behavior and toward our own countrypeople.
